Letting Go

Putting pen to paper terrifies me. It feels so final…so unchangeable. My head gets in the way of my expression. I like a way out, a back up plan. I like to know what is going to happen…even in my journaling. Last night, after a day of to much sleep, to much sugar and caffeine, to many things left unfinished and unsaid, a down day I call it… I decided to let go. I told myself…no one is watching. Trust the process. See what happens…the ugly truth of who you are as an artist. I’m not an artist, I told myself. We all are artists, she said. And so with a pencil, eraser close at hand. I let go.

Why Art Journal

Why Art Journal

I am lucky. I have seen art journaling change people. I have seen the power of simply letting go of the days worries and focusing on creating with paints, papers, inks and pens. Creating simply for the sake of creating. You discover things about yourself when you let go and make art. You find that your mind quiets and beautiful things start to happen. The best part is, it is just for you. When is the last time you did something beautiful for yourself?

“If I’m honest I have to tell you I still read fairy-tales and I like them best of all.”

Another little glimpse into my sketchbook.  I am still playing with faces and shapes and letting my imagination play thru my brush.

It’s Finally Here! ART JOURNAL CLUB!

Aimee and I are finally excited to announce our Art Journaling Clubs & Workshops!!!

So…what is Art Journaling???  Art journaling can encompasses so many things that it is hard to say what a absolute definition of it is.  Basically it is a diary but instead of just words it is a mixture of words, images, paint, stamps…well you get the idea!!! It is an illustrated diary.  It is a process of color, words and images that doesn’t rely on the outcome!

So why are we offering an Art Journal club??  I often say Art saved my life.  Meaning that Art saved my sanity, brought me back to remembering who I am and what I wanted in life.  But what I really should say is, “Art Journaling saved my life.”  Because that is how it started.

I was always “crafty” and “artsy.” But I lost that somewhere along my path (along with a lot of other important things.)  I stumbled upon an online art journaling class years ago.  Taking that class was the first (of many) steps that helped me get in touch with myself, connect with my spirit and my dreams.  I learned a lot about who I was by just simply putting some words and thoughts down in my book with some images. And the best part was…it WAS FUN!!!  I made happy messes that didn’t need to hang on the wall or impress anyone.  They were just for me.  They were created simply for the sake of being created.  And let me tell you…that is just freedom!!!

Now I am not trying to suggest that this is therapy.  Certainly some “therapy” programs use Art Journaling and it CAN be therapeutic.  But instead I want to emphasis this is truly our motto of “Art with Intention!”  It is creating with no other purpose than self fulfillment!  Exploring lots and lots and lots and lots (did I mention LOTS) of new art techniques and working with weekly “prompts” we will fill our journals with our love and spirit.

So does this sound good??  Because we WANT you to join us.  Our biweekly “club” is a gathering of beautiful creative souls just like you who want to learn about new ways to create art, who want to play with art supplies in a new way, who want to learn techniques and get a little messy and enjoy each other’s company.  It’s a modern day quilting circle!!  It is community and connection all wrapped up in layers of paint and stamps and paper.

But Ange, I have never journaled (painted, stamped ect….).  How can I do this? You do not need ANY experience to participate.  I know people put that all the time, “No experience needed” then you get there and you feel lost and feel like the odd person out.  I PROMISE YOU! you don’t need any experience to do this.

Your journal is going to be a reflection of you.  I know some of the pages in the pictures look complicated but that is why we are here.  To show you that YOU CAN do this and how to do it!  You are a beautiful creative person and our mission, our passion is to show you that.

But Ange, I already do all of this “art stuff” already.  What would I get out of your club??  Well you will get  a fabulous few hours with some great instructors *wink wink*.  But also, you will be learning new techniques, playing with new materials that you can then try in your own art creations.

Artsy types of people tend to spend a lot of time creating alone.  Which sometimes is a very good thing.  But oh, it is so invigorating to be surrounded by other people creating and exploring.  let me tell you, the energy is divine and inspiring.  After a weekend alone when I walk into the studio and get a chance to sit down with Aimee…..my ideas just explode.

This sounds awesome.  How do I get started?!?  Well you sign up!  The first sign up is kind of like your “membership” fee.  It will include a journal, lots of fun supplies for you to get started and take home.

And…..you can start anytime!!!  Today or 2 months from now, it is fine!

Once you buy your kit you pay nothing for the first 6 art journal classes that you attend.  After that there is a small materials fee (usually around $2-6) depending on the lesson.

Our classes will take place at our beautiful cozy studio at 815 S. 25th Street.  There is lots of parking.  We play music and even have some light beverages and snacks for you in the studio.  Chocolate anyone???  We will supply everything you need to create that evening.  You are always welcome to bring some supplies if you want…however we really do have everything at the studio!

Our Art Journal Club “classes” will be listed on our events page.  If you have never come before then purchase the FIRST TIME Art Journal Club ticket for $40.00.

If you have already purchased that and are planning on attending that day/night then purchase either the FREE PASS Ticket (good for up to 6 times after your first kit purchase) for $0.00

or

purchase the Art Journal Club MATERIALS FEE ticket listed for that day again that price will vary between $2-6.

You may purchase online or you may email us at invincibleheartco@gmail.com with the date of the night you wish to attend and pay us in person that evening.

Since returning home from our fabulous trip to Art is…You I have been on a sketching spree!  Working in my journals or my sketchbooks gives me the freedom to play and I truly believe that is where you develop your style, your ideas…in essence, what makes you, YOU!

I have always been drawn to faces…in particular, faces that are moody, expressive and rather primitive in feel.  After taking Karen O’brien‘s class “Character Building” I decided to try to bring the qualities of faces that I love and mix them with the images of girls in my head and so I sat down with my water color pencils to see what unique faces I could bring to life.  (her techniques and ideas are wonderful and she really helped me refine my ideas in a positive way.  Take her classes if you ever get a chance!!)

And while these sketches and ramblings are rudimentary and not really defined with layers and backgrounds I love them in their simplest state.

So here is a little peak into what my sketchbook looks like this week.  I hope it inspires you to keep playing and not focusing on the finished product…instead enjoy the journey.
